about

Spray Lancashire, UK

Ric and Jen were members of 21st century pop terrorists The Cuban Boys, who topped John Peel's Festive 50 and the UK singles charts.

Their offshoot project Spray predicted the electropop boom, unfortunately much too early for them to cash in. They released two albums in 2002 and 2006.

In 2016 they released their first full length studio album in 10 years - 'Enforced Fun'.

Track Name: The Prologue (with Jane Badler)
In the heart of a deep, dark forest in a small county in the north of England, lies a cottage. In a darkened room inside that cottage, a flickering mixing desk pulsates. Next to the mixing desk lie Spray.

Spray are a pop group. Spray despair at the world, it’s disappointments, it’s lethargy, it’s banality and it’s hypocrisy. So they have written this album. But it hasn’t helped. Their own lethargy and hypocrisy will become very clear.

This album contains contradictions disguised as irony, but don’t be fooled. Spray are trying to help you.

I am Jane Badler, and I endorse this message.
Track Name: Hit The Applause Light
Sun up in the sky, oh I got it good
Never gonna rain, not while we’ve got love
Never have too much, never have enough
Never let me fall, not while we’ve got love

Every step every step I take
Come on somebody hit the applause light
Every step is a melody
Every step is complete attention
Every step every step I take
Gimme love, gimme adoration
Every step is an energy
Every step is an aspiration

Each thought that I form, each opinion’s
Committee funded and focus grouped
Secrets I will share, bland yet debonair
Brand approval means I love you

Pumping all the fun into every life
Over-saturate every thing you like
Sell a telephone with a trope or two
“Make the moment count, when the moment’s you”
Sun up in the sky lights a world outgrown
Never gonna rain if I say it won’t
Closer to that port, when it comes to this
Clarity of thought, ignorance is bliss

Each thought that I form, each opinion’s
Musing on thoughts I’ve previously formed
Content is passé, no ideas today
Just a lifestyle now unadorned

Self evaluate, never deviate
Send me feedback if the feedback is good
Faux sincerity, documentary
Tired, so tired with every step I take
Track Name: Overdramatic
Some days the world seems tame now the fire in our love has gone out
No spark, I follow my heart and I finish up filled with doubt
Some days you seem tame and I feel I'm gonna explode
You may experience pain but it's keeping you on your toes

So when I feel there's a little lack of spice between me and you
I can see when your eyes glaze over, well I know just what to do
Ooh

She gets overdramatic
And that's why you love me
She gets overdramatic
It's why you love me
She gets overdramatic
And that's why you need me
She gets overdramatic
It's why you love me it's why you love me

I calm down, you come round, and everything's back in the frame
But the best part of a brand new start is blowing up all over again
Sometimes I wonder why it's variety that keeps us strong
That's fate - a car with no brakes - you can't stop it when things go wrong

Now people are designed to secretly crave such tension and fear
The sweet anticipation as the melodrama draws near

It's all deliberate
You think I'm kind of a flake
You're so considerate
Putting up with the demands that I make
Track Name: You Show Me The Way
Watching the rest,
I’m cursing the blessed.
Life is a test
I’m failing.

Then, out of the blue,
Suddenly you
Give me a new perspective.
You, open my eyes,
And I realize
Everything’s subjective.

You show me the way
Even I can enter the fray.
You show me the way
I can deceive, I can betray.
You make me believe
That the naïve are meant to be prey.
You show me the way
Generously…
You show me the way.

Dying inside,
I swallow my pride.
Often I’ve cried,
“Surrender.”

You show me the way
Anyone can enter the fray.
You show me the way
I can believe
That I’m okay.
You show me the way
People deceive
In order to stay.
You show me the way
Generously,
You show me the way.
Track Name: Rotating The Square
It’s a lowbrow lowbrow planet
And it’s gonna break your heart
So just don’t ascribe to malice that which is explained by incompetence
Existence is a parody that is stuffed with malcontents

Oh
Ricocheting through life
It blunts like a knife
Inertia gets stronger
Tailored for everyone
Appealing to none
Don’t leave it much longer
Rotating the square
Rotating the square
Rotating the square

But if from this life you take one thing
One simple lesson, they always said
"Make sure you cause the maximum damage before being discredited"

Oh
We’re the bees on the breeze
We’re feeding on dreams
Won’t take any longer
Dark matter soft thumbs
Kill time till it comes
Won’t get any stronger
Let’s face it we just don’t have the capacity
To be left in charge of something like society
Track Name: The Magic 8 Ball Lies
In our hands an enemy
We say we need to cope
Plumbs the depths of cruelty
To bastardize our hopes
We confess to it our dreams that aren’t coming true
It replies to it - it seems - they soon are going to

And the only way to stop it is with all your might to drop it

Cos it takes the life you fantasize
And dangles it before your eyes
It tells you it’s been prophesised
But in the bitter end... surprise!
The magic 8 ball
The magic 8 ball lies
The magic 8 ball
The magic 8 ball lies

Though, c’mon we know it’s dumb
A toy cannot divine
As soon as we’re a little bummed
We ask it for a sign
Thinking up a question fast we shake it to and fro
Hold our breath and pray at last the answer won’t be no

And the only way to stop it is with all your might to drop it

Cos it takes the life you fantasize
And dangles it before your eyes
It tells you it’s been prophesised
But in the bitter end... surprise!
The magic 8 ball
The magic 8 ball lies
The magic 8 ball
The magic 8 ball lies

Rather than rely on it couldn’t we just guess?
Wouldn’t we be better off?
As I see it, yes
If we give it more control than a person should
How would it affect us?
“Outlook not so good”
Track Name: It's Not Enough (with Kid Kasio)
I can see you in your Spanish hideaway
You spend your hours counting the money that you've made
You built your empire out as far as the eye can see
But every night your cries are carried on the breeze

You’re singing!

It’s not enough!
To be a real go getter
It’s not enough!
You gotta be one better
It’s not enough!
Let’s sing together
It’s never gonna be enough!

It’s never gonna be enough!

I'm a self made man I've made a dime or two
Invested wisely in the stocks they told me to
I'll keep on going till I'm number one - the winner
Then I'll carry on and into minus figures

It’s not enough!
To be a real go getter
It’s not enough!
You gotta be one better
It’s not enough!
Let’s sing together
It’s never gonna be enough!
It’s not enough!
To be a real jet setter
It’s not enough!
You gotta be one better
It’s not enough!
Lets sing together
It’s never gonna be enough!

No it’s never gonna be enough
No it’s never gonna be enough

HEY!

It’s not enough!
To be a real go getter
It’s not enough!
You gotta be one better
It’s not enough!
Let’s sing together
It’s never gonna be enough!
Track Name: Diabolical Mastermind
An electronics whizz with a chip on each shoulder and psychotic tendencies,
Your world fascinates me.
With a splash of jingoism and a pop art motif,
The taste of warm beer and a shot of hot tea,
However much you cackle you’ll never get away with this.

Now jamming satellites with a bomb the size of London in a zeppelin over France.
It’s a magnificent plan!
The fact you’ve thought it up disproves a theory of mine,
That it’s falling education standards turn you to crime,
But best of British anyway - it’s death by whimsy for you.

How do I keep this up?
When every turn conceals potential pain
From shredding, crushing, falling masonry from Viennese palaces

Oh you diabolical mastermind

Back at the drawing board with another evil scheme involving cricket and a Ferris wheel,
I’ll foil your dastardly deed.
You needn’t bother sending me the blueprints as a ruse,
I’m 40 steps ahead without irrelevant clues
So better luck next time, no hard feelings I hope.

Why do you persist in this?
When every one of my adversaries
Always comes a cropper
Despite their massive weaponry

Oh you diabolical mastermind

Couldn’t you channel your obsessive disposition some other way?
Maybe in arts or sports you’d find a way of expressing your anger and pain?

Despite your shady streak I’m starting to warm to your gallant, suave and courteous style.
You must be pleasant sometimes.
Weren’t you loved as a child? Were you bullied and teased?
People never really took you seriously?
Just lie back, relax I think we’re making some progress today.

How can I feel this way?
I lie awake and imagine you and me
It’s that enigma complex making you irresistable
Track Name: It's The Night Of The Long Knives, Charlie Brown
It’s a million o’clock
And God was ready for the weekend when he made you
Now you’re acting like the pope in trainers
Serendipity-boppity-boo
See the trailer – you’ve seen the movie
You could get a bloody tank through there
Someone has to suffer to make me feel better
Man the ROFLcopter mon frère

It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s a lynch mob mentality
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
Oh the humanity
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
I’m drunk enough to dance
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
I’m running low on acceptable pants

In London Town you’re never ever more than six feet from a DJ
Turn mistakes into a scandal – an error to conspiracy
They’ll fall for it everyday

It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
Wait for everybody to fall
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s a miracle there’s progress at all

I thought God would dress better

It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s a school day every day
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
Schrödinger rules the waves
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
It’s the night of the long knives, Charlie Brown
Track Name: Into A Tunnel
An atom of truth in disguise
In a universe of lies
As my golden ticket expires
Tomorrow the vultures descend
This sunset we won’t see end
So many friends to defriend
Now you’re not going viral

The champion hits the floor
Graceful in the roar
Silence is the eternal sound of war
High up in the sky
Splintered carbon flies
Cameraphones capturing the whole demise

Might cut out now I’m going into a tunnel

A pocket of air in the smoke
A spare seat on the love boat
The grain of truth in all jokes
Look on the bright side I say
No more angst, no more disarray
All sing hooray, judgement day
Now let’s break out the bunting

We haven’t learnt anything
Track Name: The 80s Never Died (with Phil Fletcher and DonQuibeats)
The plastic bracelets on my wrists
And my lacy fingerless gloves
Give the clock a backward twist
To the era that I loved.

But, no matter where I go,
I hear, to my chagrin,
“Does she know what century she’s in?”
Gotta find a way to prove
I’m not demented, I’m
An invitation to a better time,
So…

I won’t surrender, won’t give up or give in
Till the world has realized
That it could be happy if it would just live like
The ’80s had never died!

Eurythmics, Bananarama, Sparks,
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark,
The Buggles, Erasure, Art of Noise,
B-52's and the Pet Shop Boys,
The Cure, Motels, Spandau Ballet,
’Til Tuesday, Katrina and the Waves,
Yazoo, Animotion, Book of Love,
New Order, the Fixx and Culture Club.

I show my friends and neighbors how
They can add some height to their hair,
Yet instead of saying “Wow!”
They react as if they’re scared.

Still, I shave it on the side,
I dye it blue and pink,
Add a bow and ask ’em “Whatcha think?”
Even when their answer is
To laugh, I persevere;
I have to for the sake of yesteryear,
So…
Track Name: Fake Controversy Coincidentally Moves Product (with Barry Thumbs)
Gotta groove on the floor
Get your moves down before
Someone else muscles in
You're the queen, you're the king
But it's never enough
In the lights life is touch
So before you burn
The first thing that you learn
Fake controversy coincidentally moves product
All the ignorance that you can muster - if you could act coy
Will help disguise the way that this seems rather calculating.

Oh that's so controversial
It is career-ending
Oh that's so controversial
It cannot be defended

Gotta play to the crowd
But they're cynical now
Gotta move, double bluff
Put yourself on the back foot
Let 'em think that they've won
Let 'em think that you're done
They won't care who benefits
Now they've seen through the glitz
Fake controversy coincidentally moves product
Everyone's complicit so it seems and you'll find if you make a scene
Without distraction it'll all work out to satisfaction

I always said they're stupid
They seemed so superficial
And all those column inches
That can't be beneficial
That hurtful criticism
Must be career ending
Oh that's so controversial
It cannot be defended

Controversial

Nanananana. Etc.
Track Name: The Biggest Pool In LA
Consumer goods, brand name champagne
You know the lyrical drill, oh - success and fame
You wanna know how it was done?
How I'm blowin' up to kingdom come?

Some people's lives are empty and grey
And some people struggle every day
I found the secret - the easy way
I bought myself the biggest pool in LA

Smoke and mirrors stops critical thought
Show them influence - they'll be influenced and bought
Nobody looks beyond the gloss
They don't care about the time, only care about the watch

If you want to hear a hit today
You're invited to the biggest pool in LA
Chlorine adds kudos, so much cachet
To deals done in the biggest pool in LA
It's so big you can really get lost for days
Respect to the biggest pool in LA
Forget the rules they are so passe
There's bombing and there's petting here in LA

Expect people to be impressed and they always will
Dive in with utmost confidence and you'll make a mill
This ain't nothing fraudulent, it's a lifetime skill
With a dose of distraction from a ten million litre shill
Oh yeah

Everybody moves and shakes much better they say
From the viewpoint of the biggest pool in LA
Will.I.Am, Beyonce and the girl out of Spray
Dancing in the biggest pool in LA
My life I've waited all for this day
Party in the biggest pool in LA
All my people hear me, things are going my way
Since I've been living in the biggest pool in LA
Track Name: The Very Nerve Centre Of Art/Video Cliche (with Hyperbubble)
Somewhere there’s a warehouse, inside is a throwaway tune
Nearby stands a man who insists that he’s making ‘Un Chien Andalou’

His motive’s taking the form
Into a world that’s lukewarm
Where to react is conform
Where you can mount a defence
Of the work of malcontents
Under Vostell’s influence

We’re at the very nerve centre of art/video cliché
I think it’s gonna turn out alright
We’re at the very nerve centre of art/video cliché
We’re gonna take it right through the night
We’ll be synchronised
You’ll be hypnotised
And be paralysed by the sight
Of the imagery
And the irony
Of the way we’ve captured the light

Pop culture’s a buzz phrase that is very useful today (the)
Qualifier“culture” gives room for interpretation without disdain

Mention the French avante-garde
And Dada, Bauhaus, Weimar
Say “manifesto” not “art”
Although these words are in chunks
Of rhyming dictionary bunk
Never confess – and you’ve won

We’re at the very nerve centre of art/video cliché
I think it’s gonna turn out alright
We’re at the very nerve centre of art/video cliché
We’re gonna take it right through the night
Can you see the depth?
Can you sense the depth?
Is my vision clearly explained?
It’s the politics
Of expressionists
And the symbolism ingrained

Ooh Schoenburg yeah yeah I love his stuff
Oh oh yeah Hannah Hoch she really rocks
Track Name: The Final Song
When the night is nearly over
When you need your closing song
When there's time for just one more
Here's a song to take you home

This is the final song, the only one you'll need
This is the final song, it's never gonna leave
This is the final song that you'll ever need to hear

When the playlist needs an ending
When you want that finale
When it's time to leave them wanting
Here's a song to suit your needs

This is the final song, the one to take you home
This is the final song, for you alone
This is the final song, so take and keep it for your own

You can hear the perfect song
One for every mood
Oh it's the perfect song
The only one to choose
