about

Fans of Jenny McLaren (vocal, guitars) and Ricardo Autobahn (synths) - the siblings who peddle their brand of delightfully catchy, off-kilter pop under the nomenclature Spray - will understandably be expecting an EP of a remix or two following the release of a new single. It would be churlish therefore to disappoint all those fans, both old and new, so Spray release their new EP Félicette (Remix and Bonus Tracks) on the 23rd of July 2021, via AnalogueTrash.

Spray have used the first half of 2021 wisely with new and engaging pieces on social media; mostly a series of behind the scenes ‘how to’ guides, top notch advice for making hit records and documenting visits to Liverpool, with special guest appearances from Spray’s mum (plus a bonus cameo from Spray’s dad).

For those who are unfamiliar with the inspiration behind the Félicette (Space Cat) single, “Basically I bought wine that had cats in space suits on the front” says Jenny, “as this is pretty much how I choose my wine (it's rare I meet a wine I don't like), then on reading the back of the wine bottle discovered Félicette, who in 1963 became the first (and only) cat who went into space, and had been pretty much forgotten about in the history of space travel.”

She continues “I also discovered that she had been named Felix and thought to be male for some time (down with the patriarchy!), that she had been chosen out of a group of street cats as she had put on the least amount of weight during the training and had been put to sleep after returning her craft successfully so they could examine her brain. To say there were tears while researching this song is to put it lightly, not just down to the copious amounts of Félicette wine that I had to drink.”

The new EP Félicette (Remix and Bonus Tracks) had initially caused a crisis of the EP titling variety as Ricardo explains “I haven’t made it easy by making a remix EP that isn’t really an EP of (Félicette) remixes, but is an EP with a remix on it.”

The EP contains four other remixes of Spray tracks with three older favourites supporting the ambient version of Félicette (Space Cat). Super-deluxe-seven-inch-vinyl-picture-disc exclusive B-side Being A Playa Ain’t Easy, Dog gets the Emmet remix treatment, while Child of the 80s, Into a Tunnel and We Gotta Get Haircuts are Spray gold from the archives; given a rework, lockdown style.

“The lockdown versions are studio recordings of some of the spontaneous live tracks we performed online during the pandemic” says Ricardo, “and Emmet are the techno wing of The Lancashire Hotpots!”

about

Spray Lancashire, UK

Ric and Jen were members of 21st century pop terrorists The Cuban Boys, who topped John Peel's Festive 50 and the UK singles charts.

Their offshoot project Spray predicted the electropop boom, unfortunately much too early for them to cash in. They released two albums in 2002 and 2006.

In 2016 they released their first full length studio album in 10 years - 'Enforced Fun'.
